Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center
Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA
The Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is a 350,000 square foot facility dedicated to the integrated delivery of advanced cardiac and vascular care. The ten story building consolidates inpatient, outpatient, surgical, and diagnostic services within a single structure, supporting operational efficiency and improving the patient experience.
The design emphasizes daylight access, spatial clarity, and environmental performance. Floor plates are organized to maximize natural light and support intuitive circulation for patients, families, and staff. The project achieved LEED Silver certification, incorporating sustainable materials, energy efficient systems, and open, restorative interior environments.
Program elements include 136 inpatient rooms, 40 of which are ICU beds within the Samuel A. Levine Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, 16 state of the art operating suites, and a 2500 square foot education center for patients and families. The Watkins Cardiovascular Clinic provides outpatient consultation and diagnostic services, creating a fully integrated continuum of care.
